Living Moments

There are moments in life, mostly short ones, but sometimes long unheavy ones, that remind you that you are in fact still living and capable of recognizing these moments. I won't, and hope I never will, refer to these moments as life affirming or faith affirming. Those types of moments are brought about by work on your part or others, and culminates in such a way that causes you to reflect on your position in life and conclude that it was all well worth it.

But I'm not talking about those moments. I'm talking about the small, perhaps selfish moments that happen every so often at diners, waiting in line, or walking somewhere. These moments are living affirming moments. They don't convince you that life itself is worth living (though they certainly don't hurt), but rather convince you that that specific moment  in time was worth living. I'm also not talking about things like seeing a good movie or going to a party. These are actions and events, not isolated windows of existence.

A simple example would be lying awake in bed before your CD alarm goes off. As you wait, you decide you'll let two songs play before you get up. Your player is set on random, as always, and you 're unaware of what songs are going to play. As the designated time arrives, the player whirrs to life and begins to play one of your favorite songs. You lie still, perfectly content, soaking in the melodies and lyrics until it ends.

Then you think. You think of the song that needs to come next. You're picturing it in your head. You're imagining yourself listening to it. You know why you want it to play, and you know why you want it to play specifically after the last song. You know that it's the only logical song that could possibly come next, and you know that if there's a loving God in Heaven it will play next. And then it plays.

That kind of moment.
